Horse Leaders

Camp Cole is a non-profit organization dedicated to building Columbia’s first overnight camp and retreat center for children, teens, and adults living with disabilities, illnesses, and other life challenges. Camp Cole will soon be a place where individuals and groups can come together to connect, share, encourage, and shine.

Horse Leaders are responsible for the safety of the horse at all times. Maintaining proper distance from other horses in the class while walking, changing directions and passing is required. The Horse Leader does not interact with the rider as his/her role is to communicate directly with the horse and minimize distractions to the rider. Horse Leaders are trained in emergency dismount procedures and must demonstrate this knowledge prior to being a Horse Leader in a class.

Individuals must be 14 yrs or older and attend a volunteer training session. Volunteers must keep confidential all personal, social and medical information regarding riders, their families and other volunteers.

Qualifications

Attend specialized Horse Leader training and demonstrate confidence leading and interacting with horses. Prior horse experience is required. Horse Leaders need to be aware of the environmental factors that may influence a horse’s undesirable behavior and know how to handle a horse well.
